Our Story: California Citrus, Botanicals & Agricultural Heritage
Old California Botanicals is a California citrus and botanical company based in Redlands, California, in the heart of Southern California’s historic Citrus Belt.
Rooted in five generations of a California citrus-growing and packing family, we grow, source, and transform California citrus and botanicals into internationally award-winning marmalades, botanical fragrances, lip balms, candles, essential oils, pantry goods, and gifts inspired by the plants and traditions that shaped California.
This is not a brand inspired by agriculture from a distance.
It begins in the grove.
From California Agriculture, Not Just Inspired by It
Old California Botanicals is a working agricultural enterprise.
We grow and manage produce, source specialty crops from California growers, broker agricultural products, develop value-added goods, and bring those products to market.
Our approach is vertically integrated from soil to shelf.
Founder JP Beall is a State of California–licensed Produce Broker as well as a grower and agricultural manager. That direct involvement in production and sourcing gives Old California Botanicals an unusually close connection to the ingredients behind our products.
Some ingredients come from fruit grown on our own account. Others come from long-standing relationships with California growers and generational farms producing exceptional citrus, flowers, herbs, and specialty crops.
Today, Old California Botanicals works with more than 20 Southern California botanicals and agricultural ingredients, chosen for the places and microclimates where they grow best.
We believe provenance matters.
Five Generations in California Citrus Country
Our roots in California extend to the nineteenth century, and citrus has been part of the family story for five generations.
Old California Botanicals grew out of the landscape around Redlands and Inland Southern California, where citrus once shaped nearly every part of daily life—from the groves and packing houses to railroads, nurseries, hotels, advertising, food, fragrance, architecture, and tourism.
Those traditions have never felt abstract to us.
They are family history.
They are working groves.
They are the smell of orange blossoms in spring, fruit ripening through the winter, old packing labels, recipes handed down through generations, and varieties of citrus that rarely reach a modern supermarket.
Old California Botanicals exists in part to keep that heritage alive by making it useful, delicious, fragrant, and relevant to another generation.
From Grove to Marmalade
Citrus is an agricultural product before it is an ingredient.
Variety, soil, climate, season, harvest timing, and ripeness all affect what eventually reaches the jar.
That is why we approach marmalade more like a winery approaches wine than a conventional preserve company approaches jam. Different varieties of citrus have different aromatics, acidity, bitterness, sweetness, texture, and character.
We want you to be able to taste the difference.
Our marmalades showcase California citrus ranging from familiar oranges and mandarins to tangelos, grapefruit, lemons, and less-common or heritage varieties.
In 2026, Old California Botanicals earned eight honors at the World Marmalade Awards at Dalemain in the United Kingdom, including Silver, Bronze, and Merit awards.
That international recognition affirmed something we have believed from the beginning: California citrus deserves to be treated as a product of place.
More Than Citrus
California agriculture is much bigger than oranges.
Our work has grown to encompass the flowers, herbs, fruits, and plants that have helped define the California landscape.
Orange blossom, rose, lavender, violet, citrus, and other botanicals appear throughout our fragrances, lip balms, candles, essential oils, personal-care products, pantry goods, and seasonal collections.
Some are crops we grow. Others come from California producers whose farms, varieties, and growing regions give the material its character.
Our goal is not simply to create something that smells or tastes vaguely “Californian.”
We want our products to tell the story of the actual plants, places, growers, and traditions behind California.
Made in the USA, Rooted in California
Old California Botanicals products are made and grown in the United States, and many feature California-grown citrus and botanicals.
That distinction matters to us.
Agricultural regions retain their character only when there is an economy capable of supporting the people who continue to grow there.
By turning California crops into higher-value specialty foods, fragrances, personal-care products, and gifts, we can help create new markets for ingredients that might otherwise be overlooked, undervalued, or lost altogether.
It is a modern expression of an old California idea: grow something exceptional here, and find a way to share it with the world.
International Recognition, Local Roots
In addition to receiving eight honors at the 2026 World Marmalade Awards, Old California Botanicals was named 2026 Senate District 19 Small Business of the Year by the California State Senate.
We are proud of that recognition because our ambitions have always been both local and outward-looking.
We want to make products capable of earning international recognition while remaining unmistakably rooted in the communities, farms, and agricultural traditions that produced them.
From Redlands to retailers across California and beyond, every Old California Botanicals product carries a little of that place with it.
Preserving California Through Products and Stories
Some agricultural heritage can be preserved in museums.
Some needs to remain alive.
Old California Botanicals researches and shares the stories of heritage citrus varieties, historic groves, California horticulture, agricultural communities, foodways, fragrances, gardens, growers, and the plants that shaped the state.
That research informs both our products and our educational work.
We are especially interested in the connections between agriculture and the larger California story: how citrus changed communities, how immigrant growers introduced new varieties and techniques, how plants shaped the appearance of California cities, and how agricultural landscapes continue to influence the way the state understands itself.
For us, preservation is not simply looking backward.
It is keeping agricultural knowledge, crops, landscapes, and traditions economically and culturally relevant now.
A Working Agricultural Enterprise
Old California Botanicals remains directly involved in the agricultural side of the business through:
-
Citrus and specialty-crop production
-
Agricultural and orchard management
-
California-grown botanical sourcing
-
Licensed produce brokerage
-
Specialty-crop market development
-
Value-added agricultural products
-
Agricultural consulting and strategy
-
Heritage-variety research and sourcing
This work gives us direct experience with the realities behind the products we sell—from the health of a tree and timing of a harvest to agricultural regulation, labor, markets, processing, distribution, and the economics required to keep working land in production.
It also keeps Old California Botanicals accountable to the thing that started all of this:
the agriculture itself.
About Founder JP Beall
Old California Botanicals was founded by John P. “JP” Beall, a seventh-generation Californian and fifth generation of a California citrus-growing and packing family.
Beall is a grower, agricultural manager, consultant, and State of California–licensed Produce Broker whose work spans citrus, wine grapes, specialty crops, agricultural marketing, historical research, and California agricultural policy.
His work with Old California Botanicals is informed by both practical agriculture and a longstanding interest in California history and horticulture.
He serves as Vice President and has previously served as President of the Redlands Area Historical Society and is active in agricultural organizations including Farm Bureau and Young Farmers & Ranchers.
Beall holds a graduate degree from Georgetown University and has also studied at the University of Oxford.
Those different worlds—agriculture, history, business, horticulture, and California culture—come together in Old California Botanicals.
California Agriculture for Another Generation
California has always reinvented itself.
So has its agriculture.
Old California Botanicals looks backward because there is extraordinary knowledge, flavor, beauty, and ingenuity worth preserving there.
But we make products for now.
Our hope is that someone discovers a citrus variety they have never tasted, recognizes the true fragrance of orange blossom, gives a California-grown product as a gift, learns the story of a forgotten agricultural community, or simply begins to notice the plants growing around them differently.
If that happens, Old California becomes something more than history.
It remains alive.
