California gifts that ship well, and why they arrive in one piece

Posted by JP Beall on

Send what keeps for months on a shelf: marmalade, extra virgin olive oil with a harvest date, Coachella Valley dates, or California almonds. Perfume can go too, by ground within the US. Fresh citrus is worth mailing once navels ripen in November, and wine has to come from a licensed winery, with an adult there to sign.

"Ships nationwide" tells you a seller will post the box. Whether the gift arrives intact, and whether the carrier will take it at all, depends on what's inside, and that's the order this guide works in.

What makes a California gift ship well?

It has to keep without refrigeration, survive being dropped, and be allowed on the carrier you're using. Timing matters as well, because some California crops are only worth sending in their own months.

Shelf-stable food is the easy win. A sealed jar of marmalade, a tin of olive oil, or a box of dates doesn't care if the parcel sits in a warehouse over a weekend. Fresh fruit and chocolate do care. Perfume and wine carry legal limits that have nothing to do with how well they're wrapped.

California gifts that ship well, by the person you're sending to

Who it's for Gift Where it comes from Why it travels The catch
The cook Extra virgin olive oil with the COOC seal California olive growers Best within 18–24 months of harvest, in dark glass or tin Check the harvest date, not the "best by"
The baker or snacker Deglet Noor or Medjool dates Coachella Valley Deglet Noor keeps 8–12 months at room temperature Medjool keeps 4–6 months, so send it sooner
The host Almonds California orchards Dry goods, no melting, light to ship Few, as long as the bag is sealed
The breakfast person Marmalade Southern California citrus Sealed jars with a best-by date years out Glass is heavy, so it costs more to ship
The perfume person Eau de parfum Made in California Ships anywhere in the US by ground No air, no international, 16 oz per box
The office or the kids Beeswax lip balm Redlands Solid, tiny, and weighs almost nothing Easy to lose in a pocket
The wine drinker Wine A California winery Shipped by the winery itself Adult signature at the door, in person

Pantry gifts that keep for months

Anything made to sit in a pantry is the lowest-risk thing to mail, though each of these has one detail to check before you buy.

Extra virgin olive oil is best used within 18–24 months of harvest, according to the California Olive Oil Council, and should come in dark glass, tin, or bag-in-a-box to keep light out. Its seal certifies that the oil is extra virgin, grown in California, and from the most recent harvest. Some bottles carry expiration dates more than 2 years out, so read the harvest date instead.

More than 90% of US commercial date acreage is in California, and 95% of that is in the Coachella Valley, according to the Coachella Valley Independent. Dates there are harvested from September through December, so a box ordered in October or November is new crop. The California Date Commission gives Deglet Noor 8–12 months at 70°F and Medjool 4–6 months. The soft, jammy Medjool is the shorter keeper, so it goes out first.

California also grows 80% of the world's almonds, and a sealed bag of them is about as safe as a food gift gets.

Marmalade is how citrus keeps past its season. The Medalists ($24.99) is two 11 oz jars, Navel Orange and Minneola Tangelo, and the current jars carry best-by dates in February 2029. Weight is the trade-off: glass costs more to post than a bag of almonds, and marmalade is excluded from OCB's complimentary shipping on orders over $50.

Under $15, a four-pack of our beeswax lip balm is $12.99 and weighs next to nothing.

Can you mail perfume from California?

Yes, within the United States, by ground. USPS lists perfume that contains alcohol among its hazardous materials. Its rules say perfume may not be shipped internationally or mailed domestically using air transportation, and a USPS employee bulletin adds a cap of 16 ounces of perfume per package, no military or diplomatic addresses, and a Hazmat Label 876 on the box.

That means perfume can't be rushed at the last minute, since overnight air is off the table. Mailing a bottle yourself means sealing it in a bag, packing it with absorbent material, and labeling the box, so it is simpler to have the maker ship it.

The four-bottle Eau de Parfum Flight holds all four Old California Botanicals fragrances, led by Orange Blossom. The Discovery set is four 0.5 oz bottles ($85), and the Collector's set is four 1.5 oz bottles ($139). That is 2 oz or 6 oz of perfume, well under the 16 oz limit. OCB's shipping policy also rules out expedited and international air shipping for fragrance, so order it first. Orders are processed within 1–3 business days, and most ship within 24 hours.

When is fresh citrus worth sending?

From November on. At the UC Riverside Citrus Variety Collection, the Washington navel orange is in season November to January and "stores and ships relatively well". It's the orange Riverside built its name on in the 1870s. For the other varieties and their months, see our guide to specialty citrus in California.

So a box of navels ordered in October is early. Before Thanksgiving, send citrus in a jar and save fresh fruit for December.

Don't mail fruit from your own backyard tree. The California Department of Food and Agriculture says quarantines limit the transport of citrus plant material across state lines and between areas where the Asian citrus psyllid and the disease it spreads have been found. Leaves left on fruit can carry the pest. CDFA's advice is to share backyard fruit within your own area, washed, with the leaves and stems removed.

Can you ship wine or chocolate as a gift?

Only through a licensed winery or retailer. The Wine Institute says "it is never legal for an individual to ship wine", and USPS won't carry alcohol at all. An adult over 21 has to sign in person, with no signature waiver. The package can't be left at the door, so wine suits an office address or someone who is home during the day.

Chocolate has a different problem. It keeps best at 65–70°F, per Iowa State University Extension; in heat the cocoa butter softens and rises to the surface as gray bloom, so a box left on a sunny step arrives streaked. Send it once the weather cools.

Sending California gifts to a whole list

Ordering once instead of 20 times is the part that saves an afternoon. OCB's multi-address shipping lets you add every gift to one cart, enter a separate address for each, and pay in a single checkout.

The Gift Box Sampler ($95) suits someone you don't know well, since it mixes pantry, soap and fragrance and comes in Citrus, Floral, Fruit or Best Sellers themes. Because it contains perfume, it follows the same ground-only rule as the fragrance flights. The rest of the range is in gift sets.

If the list is long and the deadline is close, sort it in two: the pantry gifts and lip balm can go any time, and anything with perfume in it goes first.
