Redlands, in April.
For a few weeks each spring, fruit and flower hang on the same trees, and the scent rises off the groves strong enough to draw people outdoors.
Houses here were built with sleeping porches for these weeks, and people still drive the orchard roads slowly at dusk. Bees from a beekeeping family we have known for four generations work the rows until the light goes. Then the air cools off the San Bernardino Mountains, and the blossom settles against dry earth and old wood.
We keep one scent from those weeks, in several forms.
